A deep dive into the captivating percussive sound-worlds of three international composers: Viet Cuong (VN/US); Tonia Ko (HK/US); and Sarah Nemtsov (DE).

THE HORROR OF THE AVANT-GARDE(S) is a one-off performance event featuring the world premiere of Joseph Franklin’s concerto for piano, percussion, and large ensemble. Featuring renowned international guests Marc Hannaford on piano and Satoshi Takeishi on percussion, art direction by Tina Stefanou, words by Diego Ramirez, performances by Yumi Umiumare, and Young Voices of Melbourne featuring Bridget Bourne on percussion and Michael Mews on Hammered Dulcimer, and culinary horror by Long Prawn.

Speak Percussion presents Sonic Eclipse, an immersive percussive event that interweaves four new Australian compositions into a seamless exhalation of spatialized sound. Featuring 50+ mobilized drummers and wind players and an ensemble of 12 leading percussionists, this performance bleeds across three floors and into the magnificent acoustics of the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, reimagining the venue’s conventional acoustics and redefining the sonic boundaries of its traditional concert hall.

Innovative chamber ensembles Choral Edge and WHACKollective combine forces in a dazzling interplay of voice and percussion. "Shrewd Awakenings" dances around themes of enlightenment, consciousness, life and death, and the eruption of dormant ideas. Working with a vast palette of vocal and instrumental tone colours, the two ensembles conjure up a technicolour world and mind-state that screams AWAKE!

Alongside contemporary dancer Niki Tarling, Jesse Vivante and his ensemble respond to Meagan Streader's Sky whispers through a program of world premieres commissioned in response to this artwork, including a new work by Klearhos Murphy.

In a new work “islands” by composer-linguist K. Travers Eira, our four musicians inhabit and perform in different, musical ‘islands’. Within these contrasting percussive sound worlds, each player explores their physical and timbral environment, finding connections to another’s territory, and enabling movement between them.
